Pumps and compressors use bearings to support the impeller or rotor shaft against radial load and axial thrust, usually running continuously at speed. Leaking seals, lubricant contamination and misalignment with the motor are frequent causes of failure. Buyers need the correct bearing for each position, as a failed pump bearing can take the equipment out of service straight away.
- Use angular contact ball bearings at positions that carry sustained axial thrust, and confirm the contact angle and pairing arrangement.
- Note whether thrust-side bearings are mounted back-to-back or face-to-face, since the arrangement affects how axial load is carried.
- Protect the bearing from pumped fluid and moisture by checking the shaft seals whenever the bearing is replaced.
- Identify critical pump bearings in advance and mark them separately on your spares list so they can be prioritised.
